How To Fix Ceiling Fan Light Chain

Suddenly if you see the ceiling fan light does not work or the pull chain is just broken, you might wonder how to replace the chain or fix it. This is not a complicated project, and a DIYer can do this with proper tools and processes.

Most ceiling fans come with two different pull switches to operate the fan and light, but they can be broken at any time. Because we pull it daily, and it’s normal to be hard pull unconsciously. A hard pull can break your pull chain inside the housing or outside. Sometimes, it may wear out over time, and a normal pull might be the reason for breaking the chain.

Whatever the causes of breaking, we are going to tell you the easiest and most accurate way to change it. There have been two scenarios. Either the chain break outside the housing or inside the housing. Sometimes it can be broken inside the switch. In that cases, you need to open the pull chain switch to replace the chain.

Scenario 1: Break the chain outside the housing

In that cases, you don’t need to open the motor housing or completely change the chain. You need to buy a pull chain extension. This type of extension is easy to use, and you have to cut between two balls to take your needed length using a scissor.

You can also use an extension to extend the length of your existing pull chain. If you need a chain connector, you can buy it from a local shop or Amazon. If you are not clear on how to add an extension to your broken ceiling fan chain, watch this video.

Scenario 2: Broke the chain inside the housing.

If it broke inside the motor housing but outside the switch, you need to open the fixture and replace the chain completely. In that case, you need an extension pull chain to buy and a chain connector. And the process is almost the same as the previous.

Step #1: Turn off the breaker

Many people have been frustrated with the simple task of turning off the power to a room or to their entire home. There are so many different things to think about, from where the breaker box is located to determining which breaker controls the electrical devices you want to turn off. This can be a huge deal in an emergency situation to know how to turn off the power. If you have a main switch in your home, you can flip it in an emergency. Before removing ceiling fan housing, make sure there is no electricity.

Step #2: Remove the light fixture

First, you have to remove the light cover. Identify how the cover is attached to the light kit and remove it. And then remove all the light bulbs for safety. The light fixture might have been secured with some visible screws. You need to remove it, and here you will find all the wiring and pull chain switches. Using a screwdriver, lose all the screws and remove the fixture.

Step #3: Connect extension chain

After removing the fixture, if you see the chain is broken and can be connected extension chain, buy an extension chain and connect with the broken chain.

Scenario 3: Broke the chain inside the switch.

If you are sure you cannot connect chain extension. Now you need to open the pull switch. It is easy to open. Using your nail or a screwdriver, you can open it by inserting it at the middle joint. After separating two parts of the switch, you will see a chain and a spring. Remove the old chain and insert the new chain. And then reassemble everything.

Scenario 4: Bad switch

If you see the switch has gone bad, you should change it. Before changing the switch, take a picture and notice how much wear comes out from the pull switch. You have to buy a similar switch. Also, keep in mind the wiring and take a note for further connecting.

Final Verdict:

Sometimes the ceiling fan is running, but the light does not work because of a bad switch or any loose electrical connection. However, if your ceiling fan pull chain is now just broken, see where it has been broken, and then you already know what you need to do. Thanks for reading.
