Pull chain is the most popular method to operate a ceiling fan and light. But it can be broken any time if you pull it hard. Sometimes it can break after a few years of use without hard pulling. If it happened to you, how can you fix it? In this article, you will learn the easiest way.
There have been two different scenarios: broken chain or bad pull switch.
Scenario one: Broken pull chain:
Step 1: Turn the circuit breaker off.
To turn off the power, find the circuit breaker and flip it to the off position. Then make sure all of the circuit breakers are in the off position.
Step 2: Remove the light assembly.
Removing the light fixture is actually not that hard to do, but it can be tricky if you are unfamiliar with taking out light fixtures. Set up a step ladder to reach the fan and then unscrew all the screws that hold the fixture with the fan housing. After removing the light kit, you will find the pull chain switch. Inspect the switch closely. If there is just broke the chain, follow the next step.
Step 3: Buy a new pull chain.
From your nearest hardware store, you can buy a pull chain.
Step 4: Remove old pull chain.
You need to remove the broken pull chain from the switch. If there are any screws, lose them and open the switch. Now remove the old chain carefully and replace it with the new one.
Step 5: Reassemble everything.
Place the switch in its previous position and then reattach the light kit and restart the circuit breaker. You are done.
Scenario two: Bad pull switch:
If you suspect the pull chain becomes damaged or bad. You need to change your old ceiling fan pull chain light switch completely.
Step 1: Turn off the power.
Make sure the power is turned off in the room. You can flip the circuit breaker for over safety and test with a voltage tester if there is a presence of electricity.
Step 2: Set up a step ladder:
Now you need to set up a study step ladder and make sure the floor is flat, and the ladder is locked perfectly.
Step 3: Remove the light bulb.
First, you need to remove the light bulb from the socket. To do this, unscrew the light bulbs from the socket to prevent them from breaking.
Step 4: Remove the light fixture.
Remove all the screws holding the light fixture in place. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screws. Make sure any screws do not fall down the wall or into the ceiling. If drop any screw, find a small flashlight to guide your screws as you lower them back down.
Step 5: Inspect the switch.
The first step is to pull out the switch to inspect the chain more closely. After removing the fixture, you will find the switch, gently pull it out. Inspect the chain if there are any signs of damage. If it is bad, you need to buy a similar switch from the nearest hardware store or from an online shop.
Step 6: Remove the old switch.
If you have a bad pull chain switch, it is time to replace it. Disconnect the wire connections to the switch, loosen the screws in the mounting bracket, and disconnect the electrical wiring in the switch box. Remove the pull switch and replace it with a new one.
Step 7: Strip the wire
Now you need to strip all the wires about half an inch.
Step 8: Connect the wire
Now you need to connect your newly purchased switch according to the old connection. So, you are not an electrician or a good handyman; take a note or a picture before disconnecting the old connection.
Step 9: Check the fan.
