When your ceiling fan stop working, it’s very confusing to identify the actual problem. Especially if the issue is with the motor, how can you diagnose the problem? Most people can not test ceiling fan motors, and they think it is dangerous or doesn’t know how to test it.

However, this is not a challenging job. If you have a multimeter, you can easily check it by yourself, and this article will help you to check your fan’s motor.

Disassemble your ceiling fan

At first, you need to disassemble your fan. Turn off the power and check the current using a voltage tester. Set up a step ladder to reach the fan and make sure the ladder is placed on flat surfaces and perfectly locked.

If your fan is equipped with any light bulb, remove them and then remove the light shade or globe. Now you need to remove the lighting kit. After that, you need to remove the ceiling fan blades. Using a screwdriver, carefully lose all the screws and take down the blades one by one.

Now slip down the mounting bracket and pull out the wiring. You will find three connections: green to green, black to black, and white to white. Separate all the wires by losing the wire nut. Now hold the fan, lift up a little, move the hanger out of the box, and take it down.

Now it’s time to check your fan motor.

If a ceiling fan motor burns, you will identify it by seeing the fan coil. Any burn spot or burnt smell indicates the coil is damaged. If you do not understand by seeing the coil, you need to test it. If you see the coil color is fresh, probably the motor is ok.

You need a multimeter to test the coil.

Prepare the meter to test:

To test the fan motor, you have to select the ohmic mood from the meter. Now check the meter is ok or not. Connect two terminals of a digital meter and see the screen. If it shows any resistance, write down the value. A good multimeter will not show any value when you connect two terminals. If it shows any itself, this value will be minus from the actual value when you test the fan coil.

Familiar with the wires

Three wires will be brought out from a single-phase ceiling fan AC motor: one is starter winding, one is running winding, and another is the common wire. Wire color might vary from brand to brand, but typically, white is common, and black and red are starting and running points. Don’t worry! You can identify the wire using a multimeter. How to test ceiling fan motor

This is the main part of this article. Now we will check the motor using a multimeter.

Step 1:

Suppose there are three wires: Wire A, Wire B, Wire C.

Take the reading of wire A and wire B.

For example, We get 60 ohms.

Now for wire A and wire C = 50 ohms.

Now take the reading of wire B and wire C = 110 ( or near something)

That means:

Wire A and B + wire A and C = wire B and C

So this fan coil is good.

Here, B and C terminals are starter and runner because they have maximum value.

On the other hand, B is greater than C terminal, so B is the starter winding terminal, and C is the runner winding terminal because starting resistance will be higher than the running resistance.

And A is a common terminal. You can easily identify the common terminal by taking the reading. Those two terminals will show the maximum reading; without these two, another one is neutral.

Bad sign of a motor:

If the meter shows a very low reading or A to B + A to C is not equal or near to the B to C, that indicates the motor is not in good condition.

If any of the two-terminal readings was zero, that means the motor is short.

How to identify ceiling fan become body short:

If the ceiling fan body to any terminal shows resistance, that means the fan is body short. Hold one terminal of the meter to the fan’s body and another terminal to any wire. If the motor body is not short, the meter will not show any value.
